ALL things Nvidia Shield/Shadow

I love my Nvidia Shield TV but it seems just a tad off/laggy from using the Ghost. I’m curious about others’ experience with the Nvidia Shield TV and accessing Shadow via Shield, as well GeForce Now.

Also, are you able to get 4K via your Shield?

Hi,

I also have a shield now (2019, Tube) and at home it works relatively good.

But last weekend I was visiting a friend, he prepared and asked his provider for activating Dual-Stack and he also has a 200Mbit speed.

However the input of the controller then was so much of latency that it was impossible to play.

We then tried on his MacBook and it just ran perfect the whole time!!

The shield was even connected to Lan and the MacBook to his 5Ghz WiFi… and we tried many times on 3 different days and compared it to the macbook.

Not sure if the shadow client for windows and Mac (and ghost/Linux in your case) is just much more stable and developed than the Android client.

Or if it is the shield or shadow Android client is not capable of recognizing dual Stack correctly?

Or the Bluetooth of the shield not being capable of a Xbox one and PS4 controller at the same time?

However I am not that satisfied with shield and shadow for now, as next time I will be using rather my notebook, and the shield is not worth the money if it is working that unstable and I cannot rely on it.

At home it isais also a bit laggy in comparison to my notebook.

For 4k I can't tell as I only have a full HD tv.

But many are telling the shield just runs perfect…

Hope there will be more updates to the Android TV app also solving the problems of disconnecting and starting shadow properly

The Shield TV 2019 version doesn’t output to 4k

Oh really? Is that going to be fixed some time?

I struggle to use my shield as the bluetooth signal from my controller (tried Xbox One S and 8bitdo SN30 Pro+) seems too weak for couch gaming.

That's the make it or break it for me... I've tried the DS4 on '19 tube via Bluetooth but gameplay is intolerable for Witcher 3. I'm on the Shadow waiting list but scared the shield controller will have the same results! Still holding on to hope.....

I don’t know. The highest resolution I got is 1080 when using the shadow app. I tried it on the Nvdia shield 2017 model and the latest 2019 nvdia TV.

The only way to get 4k shadow is using their Shadow Ghost. Its $99

Its running great on the Shield 2017 Pro here. Open World games like Odyssey are better performing on Gfn, so i have both services, Shadow and Gfn. I hope Ultra is a little bit bit faster, so i can choose only one service.

about to get my tube today.. will report back on findings!

Hello everyone!

Regarding UHD (4K) sessions from Shield TV (I have a 2019 Pro), it defaults to 1920x1080 and then can’t be changed. HOWEVER, if you start a Shadow session in UHD from the macOS or PC client, and then disconnect from your Shadow without shutting it down...resuming the session from the Shield TV will make it so you can change the desktop resolution to 3840x2160 (the session will still start in 1920x1080 at first).

In short, this Shield TV/Android resolution limit, seems to be artificial, tied to which “display” is detected. Resuming sessions via the method I described above, causes the previous “display” to remain, until you shutdown or reboot the Shadow VM.

My issue with Shadow on Shield TV, is that it doesn’t support surround-sound (multichannel PCM) like GFN does. If anyone can get THAT to work, please let us know! :grinning:

Okay so it seems we need to wait for an update for the Android app to get it working in 4k more easy…

Hope shadow will fix that.

@Theephillytitan so maybe it is the shield and/or the android client is not capable of recognizing dual Stack correctly?

Because in my case it was also dual Stack at the friend where the input was so laggy while at home where I only have ipv4 it's much better...

@Jim29er  do you have your sound output through shield->TV>optical output to the entertainment system?

Because in my case that's the reason I guess 5.1 is not working

Userlevel 5

@jb-infinite my Shield TV is HDMI’d to a 7.1 sound system that supports all formats...the limitation appears to be in the Shadow client for Android.

Okay the shadow Android app really needs some more development until it is comparable to other clients :/

I exclusively used Nvidia Shield TVs, so this sounds a bit disappointing. Lag wise, I do hear that there is a new “buttery smooth” streamer in Alpha… sounds good.

How to get that alpha for Android? @rdorian

It’s not recommended that you swap between main, Beta and Alpha clients as the install and config on the VMs can change. So be willing to have to reset your shadow.

However, if you do want to participate in the Alpha then as I understand it. You’ve to be on Discord, private message an admin with an invoice for your shadow and they’ll open up additional Discord channels, of which will be the Beta and Alpha channels, which you can then request to become part of. I’ve not done this myself, but like you, I was tempted to try the new streamer, but I’ll wait until the steamer hits mainstream as I don’t want to mess with my Shadow instance (I’ve just got it set-up the way I want).

I’m sure an Admin or someone who’s been on Alpha will inform if any of the above is incorrect.

Pk so tube arrived. FUCKING FANTASTIC. Let me say, forza horizon 4, Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and Xbox one remote…. totally amazing. How can I help troubleshoot??get one of these...

How do you guys determine that the app is running at 1080p?

I've been running 4k in Windows and games, is the app bamboozling me?

Becoming a “Shadower” will give you access to the alpha channel on Discord; the beta links are in your web account under “Applications.” However, there is not a link for an Android alpha client in the alpha channel. There is a pinned procedure on how to switch to the alpha from their appliances...not sure if this would work for Android generically, and I’m not interested in trying it.

How to access the alpha from the Original Box and Shadow Ghost

1 - Switch to Beta

2 - Log out

3 - Click anywhere so that your cursor isn't in the password box

4 - Hit Control + Shift (don't need to hold)

5 - Quickly type "alpha"

6 - Should begin auto updating

7 - Enter setup again

This will enable the alpha client, you can return to the Official or PTR/Beta version through the standard menu.

@Smiie Are you saying that the 3840x2160 is a selectable Windows display resolution on your Shadow VM, when using Shield TV as a client?

Well yeah. You just have to enable a custom resolution via nvidia control panel.  (The setting is reset if you connect via another client which is a bit of a bother)

I'm looking at ways to automate the switch but I haven't been able to figure out how do enable the custom resolution

it seems that the resolution limitation does not come from Shadow but from the Shield, because Android uses the 4k resolution for the display but does not calculate the image in 4k, hence the impossibility to choose the 4k resolution in the Shadow application for the desktop

But there is a way to get around this permanently, you have to use ADB from a PC (google it) to force the rendering in 4k permanently with the command:

wm size 3840x2160

All the elements of the Shield will appear very small, so I recommend also changing the display density with:

wm density 480

After that, the 4k resolution in the Shadow app on the Windows desktop will still be available, tested and approved on the Shield 2017

<snip>

The app itself should be able to utilize the UHD resolution, like other apps. I think they’ve just chosen not to.

Forcing the UHD resolution globally on the Shield (for the home screen and such) breaks other things; but if you don’t use those other things, go for it.
