ALL things Nvidia Shield/Shadow

I love my Nvidia Shield TV but it seems just a tad off/laggy from using the Ghost. I’m curious about others’ experience with the Nvidia Shield TV and accessing Shadow via Shield, as well GeForce Now.

Also, are you able to get 4K via your Shield?

I’m also a proud owner of a shield (tube) since a few days but there is one thing I can’t seem to solve. My Xbox One Wireless controller disconnects at some point when playing on shadow. I have to restart streaming to have it connected again. Anyone else encountered this issue?

Hello,

Did you have any luck with testing older versions of the client?

Hi there,

The problems went away for me with the current beta version (3.6.4), so I didn’t go back and test the older clients.

Thanks, I will try with Beta version.

@Stew1864thank you for that feedback; 3.6.4 is the latest Android beta and the version I’m running (also on a Shield 2019 Pro). I hadn’t used Shadow on the Shield for a while - I’ve mainly been using a Windows 10 PC that is connected to the same TV gear that the Shield is.

Last night I ran Shadow on the Shield, and video stuttering/choppiness was readily apparent in games, and also via using https://www.testufo.com/ (selecting the “Compare Frame Rates: Video Game Motion”). I did the same things from Shadow on the Windows PC (again, using the same TV/settings) and it was smooth. There is always a periodic “blip” in the video when running the testufo thing, but nothing like was happening on the Shield.

I then ran the same game via GeForce NOW on the Shield, and that video performance was also smooth.

It does (anecdotally) appear that something has regressed in the video performance for the Android Shadow client on Shield. As you said, the Shield TV is not an “officially supported” platform, but we should still report these issues.

We do have the ability to sideload older client versions (they can be downloaded from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/blade-group/shadow/) … if I have some time this weekend, I’ll experiment with some older versions (including 3.4.6 and older) to see where the problem was introduced (assuming it has something to do with the client itself).

Hello,

@Jim29er yes i tried Geforce now and that was perfect only downside is my game saves on assetto corsa are not available on Geforce now and i am really not in the mood to repeat a 3hr endurance race around Laguna Seca, As it goes i think Geforce Now is by far a superior service in the performance stakes it's just shame that some publishers will not allow their games on it.

Incidentally i have tried shadow on my friends Apple Tv 4k and it was perfect, I'm beginning to suspect more and more that shadow cares more about Apple than it does Android i mean the features on ipad vs android tablets are night and day,

The Nvidia Shield is the perfect streamer i mean it does everything so so well but it seems like Shadow just push out a generic Android app and if it doesn't work then it's 'oh we're not optimzed for that but we'll look into it' poor imo,

Once again though thanks for your reply

Hi

First time poster and hope this is the right topic

I have a 2019 shield pro and for months shadow has ran great on it, now i've been away with work for around a month and i've come to use shadow on the shield again my games are unplayable, it lags and stutters terribly and now freezes and games crash, only on shield

Shadow support say shield is not supported officially is anybody else having issues with shield?

I am ethernet connected with 220mbps

Please help!

Hi @Stew1864, are you saying that other devices on the same network work fine for Shadow, but the Shield is problematic? Can you let us know which client version is running on the Shield?

@kikangh2 If you would be so kind as to provide screenshots, that would be great. I experimented with this last night, and could not get true surround sound working with the “BladeShadow” device...it was always limited to two channels, both from Shield and a Windows PC connected to the same sound system. Using the Steam Streaming Speakers is currently the only method that works for me.

@kikangh2 Many thanks for your observations - it sure would be great to have proper surround-sound without having to use workarounds.

In terms of the “Nvidia sound device” you’ve been referencing, is that the “BladeShadow” device (see screenshot below), or a different one?

This method worked on my Shield-based setup a few days ago, and I’d like to compare notes with other Shield TV users.

Oh, and the AI-upscaling in the 2019 Pro works with Shadow, too!

Hi, Just got my Shadow boost, tried to get surround sound working with my Shield 2017 following the thread you mentioned, and it was not working so far.

While trying to troubleshoot, I realized that an Nvidia audio device was already installed and capable of surround sound. I selected it but had only stereo sound. Then I realized you could right click on the sound icon in the windows task bar, and then select between stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. My onkyo amplifier recognized the channels directly, and when I did a test, the channels were perfectly in place !!!

Started a game, and enjoyed surround sound the easy way.

Great job Shadow !!!!

Loving it, this is so much better than GeForce Now !

Edit : after trying to use this again yesterday I couldn’t select the Nvidia sound device after opening my shadow from my Shield. The device was disconnected. Opened shadow on my Mac, and there it was, connected, selected as output, and in the 7.1 configuration I had setup earlier. Reconnected the session on My Shield, and it stayed active.

Conclusion so far is that one would need to open the shadow on the Mac (or PC?) first, then open the shadow app on the shield in order to play with surround sound.

Finally got my hands on a Shield, got a incredible deal for it.

Hooked it up to my 4K TV and it ran at 4K native right away on Shadow.

Dont really know which game to try, the TV is mostly in use during the day and afternoon.

Still waiting for the bigger rigs to be available.

I first started Shadow on the Shield client and it took some patience to set and continue the low-res configuration screens for setting up Windows.

The client kept on reloading the screen after a few sec and showing the installation window, before trying to set a resolution and/or refresh rate. Android was set to 4k - 60 (59 default).

After, it showed a small error window, placed over the interactive windows screen.
Finishing the configuration, windows loaded in 4k.
Only weird thing to me is when looking at settings, the refresh rate will not change and what is that default resolution?

Oh really? Is that going to be fixed some time?

I don’t know. The highest resolution I got is 1080 when using the shadow app. I tried it on the Nvdia shield 2017 model and the latest 2019 nvdia TV.

The only way to get 4k shadow is using their Shadow Ghost. Its $99

It should work, i got 4k to work on a minix neo.

Have you tried the beta version? There is also a option to disable automatic detection of the resolution. Then you can pick your own resolution.

It also worked on my asus vivobook ah200a, but it was too weak and it stuttered while the game had no fps drops.

Is any Wireless Headset working for the Shield? In Gfn all Headsets are working, in Shadow not

My tube won’t even load up desktop keeps crashing

thoughts ????

Hi all,

I’m using Shadow on my 2019 Nvidia Shield (tube) and am more than happy. I have it connected via LAN to my network (400 mbit/s downstream & 20 mbit/s upstream). So far I have played some open-world titles like Vampyr or Elite: Dangerous on it and have not had any noticeable input-lag or video/audio issues. The Shield pairs very comfortably with an Xbox One Controller via Bluetooth and it’s directly recognised by Shadow. The only issue is that I have to enter my login details in the Shadow App quite often, which is a bit annoying as it’s the only time I “need” (for more comfort) to grab a Bluetooth keyboard and also that I get nearly no feedback from the app regarding whether my Shadow has now properly shut down when exiting it.

All in all great experience with Shield + Shadow.

Pk so tube arrived. FUCKING FANTASTIC. Let me say, forza horizon 4, Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and Xbox one remote…. totally amazing. How can I help troubleshoot??get one of these...

Are you able to use the app launcher in Shadow on your Shield to run forza horizon 4 directly, or do you need to launch to the shadow desktop and run it from there by using the mouse?

Only thing that works from launcher for me is steam BPM and steam games. Everything else fails 😭

I found that when I completely close out of a session that’s in 1080P and open on my UHD TV, it opens in UHD. When I try switching, from 1 resolution to another, it asks to “update”, which when you allow, changes the resolution correct. Otherwise--issues.

Here’s a recent thread about the caveats of enabling this:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/353645/span-classhighlighthowspan-to-span-classhighlightf/

It might be benign for most people, but YMMV.

I can confirm that this allows shadow to auto-select 4k. Not quite sold on how small the Android TV ui becomes, but we’ll see.

Had some issues with plex subtitles but setting them to ‘huge’ fixed that.

I have a 2017 Shield with controller and it works great when it does work. my TV resolution is 4096x2160 compared to 3840x2160 like most 4k tvs. and Shadow naturally starts in this resolution, although I usually set it to 2560x1440 via Nvidia control panel to ease up on network usage and from 10 feet away it makes no difference except larger menu fonts in some games, which helps.

** If you do change to a higher resolution using Nvidia Control Panel, Be sure to right click desktop -go to Display settings and mess around with “scale” to your liking, unless you are Ant-Man and like the 2mm start button. **

Out of curiosity as a TV nerd, which TV is that?
