ShadowVR status

Hi guys 'n gals,

Hats off for the forum. That was a great idea.
I'm working in my introduction in the other thread, but a question came to mind right away.
What's the status of ShadowVR? I've been using Virtual Desktop in Shadow and even though it runs okay, I'm looking forward to using the actual Oculus Link within Shadow.
I know they are working on a VR ‘project’ and I'm very interested in that.

Any info is much appreciated!

+1 here :-)

I can’t wait to try the shadow quest app!

I joined a shadow stream way back in Feb and they said it was being worked on, although I’d love a full answer to this

+1 For me too.    Shadow is a killer app for Oculus Quest.    Or is Oculus Quest a killer app for Shadow?   VD works pretty well but proper integration would be even better.

The VR exploration program

Shadow has a lot of things coming in terms of communications but all of the testings right now is under NDA as a part of a closed beta (that is why we don’t see or hear anything about it). However Shadow, as a company, would not be true to its spirit if it did not share this journey with you, and so it has been working on plans for that.

Expect a whole lot of news in the coming month regarding the VR exploration program ( what it takes to develop, who’s involved, the challenges and hurdles that might have caused problems, etc.)

Any details , updates or questions in regards to The Shaddow VR program  . Feel free to discuss any awesome VR experiences / games or upcoming releases.

Mod Edit: Merged duplicate discussion into primary one

I don’t think you can expect to use oculus link with Shadow because of usb over IP bandwidth limitations.  However you can play oculus titles with Virtual Desktop

I haven't thought about this. Is there a max on usb speed in Shadow?

It’s all about bandwidth and latency, right? The rest is just video - so as long as you have the bandwidth for the video, you don’t need full USB 3 speeds. Just cause it’s there, doesn’t mean it’s needed.

The rendering is done on Shadow’s side, and the video is compressed and transmitted to the headset just like Netflix plays a video, you’re playing a game - except you have instant feedback and response in that game and are altering the stream in real time. You’re paying for how much/fast/rate you can render on their end, along with your homes super-fast connection, and the have distributed data centers all over the world/country to reduce the latency (lag) between you and them, which decreases that delay of you moving your hand/mouse/controller just that much more and improving the experience until it’s aaaaaamazing…

Anyhow - Oculus has improved the link connection even down to USB 2 speeds right? So even they have optimized it - just like the Virtual Desktop folks have done.

There are soooo many factors that alter the experience between you and them though, and it’s super hard to control. I can only imagine given the level of network snooping and optimization I’ve been doing lately to improve it just a few more miliseconds..

That said - I can’t wait to see what Shadow is doing, because a native app working directly with shadow servers to optimize the transmission rate to be as lightweight as possible and reduce the barriers between them and you. The graphics, they’re subject to the above - and I don’t think they can really be improved. What can be is the response rate back and forth.

On the other hand, with the additional bandwidth of the USB3 connection, what else could Oculus do? Could they improve the AR experience and use the combined PC power in real-time to provide cabled augmented reality ala Magic Leap? Now that would be interesting..

I got my Quest running on my SHadow Ghost box and really works very well. You need to take a few steps but totally worth it:

This was a month ago. Any news?

Love my Shadow using VD but would love it even more if I could connect my Quest directly without using my laptop.
