Red Dead Redemption 2 - Game crash from main menu

Red Dead Redemption 2 - After recent patch game crashes from main menu when choosing Single player, Multiplayer or Settings. It affects all of the shadow users I believe and some other unlucky folks. Im honestly surprised its not a thread here yet. There is a lot of threads on steam and other forums.

My copy is thru Steam , but I believe it doesn't matter much

Any recommendations online were not able to resolve this issue incl:

Editing settings. file to switch DX12 to Vulkan and back

Windowed or fullscreen

HDR On/Off

Async On/Off

Reinstalling whole game

Reinstalling / updating drivers

Logging in under new user

Run as administrator (game wont even start)

Running game in Offline mode - Forever loading screen

Windows Event viewer doesnt show any reason for app crashing.

Literally nothing works, last update just bricked the game completely for us

My only guess knowing shadow system is some kind of game/online protection that now affects Shadow remote machines.

I submitted a ticked to Rockstar. Hope we can find a resolution instead of waiting for another RDR patch.

That would really suck if they didn’t fix it for Shadow users. Is there no way to roll back to a previous version that works fine? This is what I hate about modern gaming. You never really own a game that you can play “forever“, you kind of just are paying to rent it for as long as they decide to keep it working with your hardware… even games that were built to run on Windows 95 in 1996 still run fine on today’s machines so they really have no excuse.

Talked with R* again about rolling back manually and they said there is no way to roll back. They said it is on Shadow to fix.

Hellloooo Shadow, Going to Fix? Response, Yes or No please...

I opened a Shadow support ticket and they replied that the issue has also been noticed outside Shadow on native PC systems, they basically passed the ball to Rockstar telling me to take it up with Rockstar support :expressionless:
I have an active support thread with Rockstar support, but it’s going nowhere at the moment they suggested all the moves you find online which don’t fix the crash we’re experiencing from the main menu.

Khlthorn,

It is not true that it is happening to other “normal” PC users. I was told specifically by R* that they looked into it and found it only to be Shadow users. I don’t know why Shadow is, well I can guess why, telling everyone the same BS that it is happening to others. R* IS NOT going to fix it, it is on Shadow, I was told this explicitly. Shadow is not officially supported so R* does not test on their system so they will not troubleshoot their system.

Heard from R* today that Shadow is not officially supported and they narrowed the issue down to only happening on PC users running the game through Shadow. I.e. they aren’t going to fix it, so is Shadow working on a solution to this? The roll back patch that ran today was only for PS4 and Xbox One, the online issues where not a problem for PC, so no PC patch released. If not there is no point in my membership anymore and I would like to cancel if Shadow doesn’t plan on fixing this.

Time for me to get the game on Stadia then.

Rockstar is not supporting Any cloud gaming service. They have pulled the service from Geforce Now, and now Shadow the same. It Iill only remain on Stadia. My guess is, Gta5 will same same happening.

Don't get your hopes up, quality and picture compression looks like complete trash on 1080p mode and max network, slightly better on 4k mode but 25-30 fps with lags and network hiccups on 500mbps network.

Rockstar doesn't need to support cloud gaming, just stay out of the way. It was working perfectly fine two weeks ago. They pulled it from Geforce to sell stadia exclusive, i guess its up to Shadow to make sure devs cant block their streaming service.

In the meantime, i bought this game 3 times already =) Ps4, PC, Stadia. All of them are unplayable for one reason or the other …

Regarding the crashing on Shadow - is the perception that it’s a willful Rockstar thing, or just that they don’t understand what the issue might be with the virtual machines?

Also, what’s the issue with the PS4 version?

I’ve had this game on my wishlist for a long while, but I’ve been waiting for the price to come down. I’ve recently started playing Horizon Zero Dawn (I don’t play games on consoles), and that is going to keep me busy until Cyberpunk 2077 releases. But, I’m tempted to purchase RDR2 just so I can get in on the fight with Rockstar, as it sounds like they are being rather unreasonable.

I’m fed up with this… Rockstar aware but I’m not convinced by the answers given by their support.

Refund requested to the Steam support. Let’s see what happens.

So I opened a ticket with Rockstar yesterday and provided several log files for their review. I’m getting a different response than others have:

”We would firstly like to thank you for your effort in bringing this to our notice and I would like to inform you that our concerned department is looking further regarding this and we will be fixing this as soon as possible.”

Please keep us posted. I worry this could be the start of a disturbing trend.

My only option at this point. My actual computer isn’t powerful enough to run the game properly. Even with everything on low, I have major lag. Very low FPS. in my case, Stadia would be a massive improvement. Going to buy it on Stadia when I get paid on the 1st.

Those kind of issues are related to game security protection I believe, last three updates to RDR they did their best to improve security from cheaters and etc, and eventually they broke it completely to the point when its unplayable and  bricked it for VM users.

From my understanding the only issues with games on Shadow system are all related to some kind of security code and protection.

You don't need to pay for it. Use free plan , because 4k is only available on 4k screens anyway.

Still have to pay for the game though. The game itself isn't free.

What about for the Rockstar Launcher version of the game?

I have Red Dead Redemption 2 installed on my home PC and I’ve had no issues at all but it crashes upon launch with Shadow Tech. At home I’m using a GTX 1660 Super, I think the GPU that Shadow Tech uses for Boost is too outdated to run RDR2.

THanks for that. I tried it and when I launch it (via steam), it goes to the rockstar launcher and tell me that I need to update the game in order to play

Same here. Installed RDR2 yesterday after a long time off just to run into this issue. For hours I went through all possible fixes offered in forums with no success. Later I saw this topic that the problem is related to Shadow. Especially the CTD after choosing a game mode or settings, which is exactly my problem too.

This workaround was working fine for me a few days back.  Now, when I launch the game I get a pop-up from Rockstar saying “Update Required - You must update Red Dead Redemption 2 before launching it. Check that updates are enabled in Steam and try again.”

Anyone else seeing this now?

Same here !

RDR2 isn’t working on shadow boost or infinity.

when the game is launched, it always get back on the windows desktop !!

Rockstar or Shadow aren’t doing anything !!!!

does anyone contacted shadow and had an answer ???

Visit the steam thread where the workaround originates. It has more indepth step by step on how to downgrade.  If you are asked to update then you’ve missed something

See the steam thread where the workaround originates it has more indepth instructions among others

“Good practice is to keep the 4 OLD files you replaces in a separate folder and add them again once you get a "need update" to play message. Re-add old files and play online mod until crash at which point go into offline mode again, cut at paste the 4 files you go from the DownloadDepot again into rdr2 folder and you have the game again--rinse and repeat until you faint and/or die waiting for new R* patch fixing issue.”

Shadow cant do anything. R* acknowledged the bug. There is a community fix evolving on Steam for offline & online play.

The post is linked further up.

people here saying the problem is only woth shadow users are wrong. There’s a big steam forums thread with many users that are not using shadow. It’s a R* issue people and they have told many people so in suppirt tickets.

Thosw who bought the game on Steam can use the rollback posted here which is working just fine, albeit for story only.

Those getting a activation error on rockstar the second time trying to play after rolling back the game nees to verify the game files on steam (keep the 4 files steam downloads so you don’t have to verify every single time), then launch the game and get the crash on the main menu and then go offline on steam and past on the game directory the files you got from depotdownloader.

We need to do this every single time we are launching the game but hopefuly R* will get their shit together soon.
