Using Shadow Only For VR

Userlevel 1

So, the story here is (it is a TLDR story don’t worry):

I bought an Oculus Quest a couple of months ago. Enjoyed the library of games.

Then looked to getting into PCVR.

Didn’t want to spend $$$$$ on a VR capable PC.

Saw Shadow. Bought. Waited. Activated.

Installed Steam, added 256GB extra HDD. Bought & installed Half Life Alyx.

Installed Virtual Desktop on the Quest, then sideloaded to get full capabilities.

Fiddled with settings in Virtual Desktop to get best experience. I am like 30 or so miles from the datacenter so latency is a non-issue (SO HAPPY)

I am probably, right now, half-way through the game. Only complaints I have with the VR experience is when my internet (xfinity) has a wobble and the network lags causing 2fps for a few seconds.

Sometimes need to reboot the Quest / Shadow to jump back in without lag issues.

All in all, experience is at an 8/10.

Most of the time it is a 9/10 due to my good internet and close proximity to the datacenter.

What are other peoples experiences with VR and Shadow? Shadow is literally my ONLY way to experience PCVR as of right now. Thank you Shadow.

P.S: I hope the beta for the Quest <> Shadow thing will be open to more people in the near future, i’d love to try it out.

My experience in the Uk on Paris datacenter seems better than yours, only got my Shadow this week but not had a problem playing Alyx so far. 10/19

If youre with xfinity, I suggest disabling the advanced firewall setting on your router that usually causes issues for Shadow.

Yes! You are so right there!

I tested out the Advanced Firewall stuff and it stopped Shadow from working along with other home-server related stuff. Lack of configuration of the “Advanced” feature from Xfinity made me promptly disable the feature.

I guess this relates to:

This only happens once every hour or so, and even then it is something that happens sometimes and not every day. Shadow PC has enabled me to experience a plethora of PC VR on my Quest.

ok so for some reason i cant get vr to work with shadow, cant connect to side quest and quest cant be found on the oculus app or side quest.tried to reinstall adb but keeps telling me that there isnt any devices for adb. can someone please help me with setup step by step or a link to follow plz!? im dying to play alyx. i had it working for a day but after a update it stopped working and yes i have dev options and debugging enabled.

Use the Quest and Virtual Desktop. The subreddit should have guides as well)

So your problem is with your local PC not your shadow? (Sidequest isn’t installed on the shadow PC) there are plenty of guides to setting up sidequest, google is your friend.

It's a bit fiddly to set up but it's a worthwhile experience. I'm on a 50Mb connection with 14ms latency to Shadow in Paris. It does need the bandwidth though and you have to be very careful about other users on your connection at the same time. Ultimately I've ended up with the best experience later in the evening after my kids have gone to bed.

One issue on bandwidth though is that I'm never really sure what the best setting in virtual desktop actually is. You can set between low, medium, high or insane but the higher settings seen to cap to the available speed anyway. Plus they don't appear to report it correctly either. Something that I'm hoping the Shadow specific app will rectify in line with the way that the Shadow desktop app deals with bandwidth.

Does the Oculus rift S works with shadow?

My experience with shadow and VR has been fantastic on my oculus quest, I rarely have lag and latency is typically a non factor. I’m about 15 miles from the NY datacenter. That being said my biggest complaint is with the auto-disconnect. after about 25-30 minutes it will shut down while I’m playing. Shadow doesn’t recognize my headset or controllers as user activity, it only recognizes mouse control as user activity.

This isn’t an issue for most games since they have loading screens or other indications to move my mouse, however I’m training to be a pilot and one of my training tools is X-plane VR. When flying around in X-plane (or MSFS) time feels different, 5 minutes could feel like hours and sometimes an hour can feel like minutes.

While I know VR is not fully supported by shadow yet, this issue has made it nearly impossible for me to use this for anything more than a standard gaming rig rather than a training tool and I’ve found myself using shadow less and less.

No, only the quest and go are compatible, although I wouldn't recommend the go, it's not a good experience.

The quest works great though.

If you hard wire your Shadow device "aka. laptop pref." running shadow. Then set up a private 5g network connection just for your Quest using it's Mac address and only your Quest Mac address (you have to shut off DHCP in your router settings to do this) your connection should improve substantially without the worry of network traffic as well. Your other devices would be limited to your 2.3ghz signal is the trade off. Unless you had a second router that could be set up just for your Quest alone in APN mode....🤙

Yeah, using VD on the Quest works really well, other than SteamVR and Oculus seem to crash after ~30 minutes of playing.

i bought shadow service for the same reason. I’m using the shadowpc app directly on the oculus quest 2. My internet connection is very fast, but I have a very laggy vr experience. Also, it makes me retype my login EVERY TIME i start the shadowpc app, and the connection times are atrocious. Because of this I haven’t spent any extra $$ on games for steam vr since i assume they wont be playable. On a low-traffic time of day, google earth vr is works decently. I try that because it is free.
