I am curious what level shadow service you guys are doing and your results for game play?
I play but don’t get decent enough performance to use shadow for it.
There are a few hardware limitations with boost right now.
- Lack of SSD’s: Star citizen streams the assets instead of preloading them. Boost doesn’t have SSD’s(yet?)
- CPU speed: The xeons are too slow at 2.3 GHZ Ultra and Infinite will fair better at 4Ghz
- RAM: 12 GB instead of the 16 GB recommended
I got much better performance running some test’s on an AWS g4dn.4xlarge, but the cost to performance ratio and ease of use make it even less feasible.

Shadow storage uses hybrid HDDs + SSD. I believe SSD cached HDDs.

Either way I’m definitely not seeing SSD like performance.

Yep, unfortunately.
I've had a few good sessions of SC on Shadow Boost. I'm 300+ miles from my Shadow server so I do get lag every now and then. While dogfighting, mining, and FPS are out of the question I've been able to do trade runs without too much issue. I
I got shadow over a year ago just for SC. I'm still on boost.
Its on an HDD? hmmm pretty fast for me. Star Citizen I get close to 60fps on 1080p
In the German Discord Community there are actually a couple of people that play Star Citizen on Shadow. I mean, it does seem to give you a varying experience, but SC is also not that optimized.
I am playing on Boost and cannot get more than 28 fps from it. So almost unplayable.
I’m on Boost & SC too. I get some good days, ave. 30-40fps (1080p, UK, Paris Centre) but it does struggle, especially Lorville (poor FPS anyway).
Ultra would be a better option & I’m hoping the Shadow Team will consider letting folks upgrade - yeah, I know, hard to do…
Still, I’ve got back into Elite Dangerous with Shadow, so not all bad news !!

True, I am waiting right now for additional storage at least (as I am using AMS DC it is still not available) and for Ultra available as well (especially for RAM and storage). In 2021 there will be as well a new mode of Elite Dangerous, we’ll see if it can be better than SC
In my opinion having only 12 GB of Ram in boost is a severe bottleneck to play SC smoothly.
I play SC on boost and with 3.9.1 I get lags and stutters in game, especially in the big cities and when moving and the background is loaded. And very low fps in the big cities. I wish it would be possible to add some more Ram to boost.
From what I have seen on twitch and YT, SC runs a little bit better with Ultra.
