Hello everyone (and a happy belated 🎃Halloween),

This is Raphaël, your product manager for the Shadow App for Oculus Quest - aka Shadow VR (Alpha) -.

It’s been a bit more than a week since the app was released in its Alpha state and I wanted to thank you all for trying it out. It’s given us some great insights so far, and it’s going to help us even more moving forward.

I was happily surprised to see more than 1,200 of you fine folks downloaded the app in the first week. Cheers!

Thanks to your help, we've already confirmed and identified root causes for common blockers such as:

  • being stuck on “starting Shadow VR”

  • landing on a zoomed-in 2D desktop environment

But also other major issues like:

  • the overall lack of fluidity of the head movement

  • the update time when changing devices

So thank you to all you stubborn people out there who keep trying to help us find these issues! :)

We are also happy to see that most of your positive feedback mentions good hand tracking and latency, as well as the image quality (when not moving the head).

🧱 Meanwhile

The whole development team, as well as myself, are working 100% remotely since the French government announced nation-wide confinement to counter the rising numbers of active COVID-19 cases last week.

Since this is the second time we are in confinement in 2020, the team and I are better prepared and I’m positive that these circumstances won’t affect the development of the app. We are equipped with all necessary tools and are luckily all in the same time zone.

Working together could of course be easier, but so far our scope and plan won’t need any deeper adjustments.

📣 Stay Tuned
Very soon we will release a new Alpha version and the changelog along with it.
On top of that, we will let you know what has been done since launch of the open Alpha & what the team will be working on next. You can even challenge our decisions there :)

Have a great day and stay safe,

PS: This would be me totally not using Shadow VR on Quest 2. I am staying in the Shadows, don’t worry.

Can’t wait! It’s huge to be able to launch into your shadow in VR without having to set it up from another device first

Looking forward to see head moment get fixed, it’s the only major issue with being in VR that is making me hold off testing VR apps. Are you planning on adding standard desktop interface support in the future or do you intend on Shadow VR to be limited to just the VR environment?

Hi Vinny,
I was initially planning to wait and see how the native SteamVR dektop mode evolved but the more I think about it, the more I think we will need to offer a standard 2D desktop interface option ourselves in the future.
I would like for the app to launch in Stereoscopical mode by default though and fall back in 2D only when needed to validate a prompt/password/update or when specifically requested by the user. This is not set in stone.

I can’t wait for an update so this can run on the Quest 2, however it looks great so far!

Hand tracking is supported already? I think I’ll give this another shot! (And hope that it works this time.)

I think it’s a necessity to have

a.) a full featured desktop mode in VR, or

b.) a way to use the PC and the headset at the same time.

Some nice extra features would be

  1.  Overlaying desktop while playing VR at the same time
  2. Hand and finger tracking.

Some issues I’ve encountered are

  1. The desktop view shows in VR with no way to controll it, and I have to go cross eyed to see.

Where did I write that? o_o

Sorry, I misunderstood something someone else said, they said hand tracking as in where the controllers are, not hand as in no controllers.

quest 1 and 2 owner here. Happy to test and provide feedback on both.

Why is this a Quest 1 exclusive currently if Quest 2 is the same platform, albeit with better performance?

What a tease with the quest 2. Keep up the great work! 😀

so…. what’s the fix for

  • being stuck on “starting Shadow VR”

  • landing on a zoomed-in 2D desktop environment

and when can we expect the update, if there is one?

these issues are treacherous! I’ve been getting crashes! Taking off the vr headset or leaving the play area is a death sentence and i have to restart the shadow a million times to do everything over again. it worked like a charm the first time! Beginners luck, then I experienced a litany of crashes and those two main issues referenced in the first part of this post. thank you and would love to know when to expect more.

I was finally able to test the app. My problem was steam not logging-in on shadow at the start, then ending up on a zoomed 2d desktop. I had to log-out from steam on my own laptop and log-in on steam on shadow, then close the shadow client and open the shadowVR app. It worked and logged directly in steam VR.

I was able to test halyx and i noticed that indeed the image quality was pretty good, controller tracking and latency as well. Majior problem was very pronounced image stuttering resulting in not so fluid motion.

Unfortunately i could not test the oculus store games. I have revive installed and they work fine on virtual desktop, but on shadowVR/steam it would initiate the starting phase then go back to the steamVR home environment.

Is this issue known?

Hope this helps! Thanks for the great work

Tested with my Quest 2 which went fine if you forget about the current blurryness due to the missing support.

No Mans Sky was running pretty smooth.

Looking forward to the Quest 2 support for some local vs. shadow Beatsaber latency tests.

Hey klepto did you have steam vr open or not? I got it to work a few time and the image quality is great better than VD but I can’t get it to work anymore it either is stuck on starting shadow or it goes to a desktop screen

Hi, I’m an Oculus Quest (1) owner.  I’ve read that you were doing some testing since May 2020, but I missed the announcement of the ShadowVR release via SideQuest.

I went there recently and saw the application is no longer there. Are you releasing an updated one soon?

I’d like to test this out as I’ve used VD and though there was some lag, I did enjoy being able to play using my quest headset.  Controls seemed to also be a bit of a challenge (from the oculus controller standpoint).

One other thing I wanted to know was if there was a way to use the link cable through my computer into the Shadow PC to use Oculus Rift PC application? This opens the PCVR games and other things like RobloxVR.  Been trying to figure this out for my son.  It’s been a challenge and I was only able to get the link to work through my own computer but extremely laggy to the point of not working.

Any reply is appreciated!

Thanks!
