06/15 Weekly Post: Shadow Boost Activation Update

Hey Team Shadow,

For those of you who have pre-ordered Shadow and are still waiting, know one important thing:
We *still* haven’t forgotten you!

For Week 2 of our new weekly updates here, we’ve made a small edit to what we added last week: “End of Week target”
 

Monitoring the chatter, we noticed that “End of Week” led to the impression that people who had not been activated by Thursday might be activated Friday. The reality is that currently we,

  • Activate Monday through Thursday
  • Beginning at 8am local time each day for each DC
  • And sometimes squeeze in a few extra activations before we finish assessing activation status on Monday to provide this update


Because of this, we’ve changed that last part to be: “Target by next Monday’s update”

It is still effectively our target for our end of the week, but we hope this name change helps clarify any confusion. Looking forward to hearing your feedback!
 

Below is the activation information by datacenter - you can check which datacenter you belong to if you don’t know. 
 

CHICAGO:

If pre-order date is before May 26th:
Activation by end of June

If pre-order date is between May 26th - June 1st:

Activation by July 23rd 2020

If pre-order date is June 1st or later:

Activations starting July 2020

Target by next Monday’s update:
Latest activation has May 1st pre-order date
 

DALLAS:

If pre-order date is before May 26th:
Activation by end of June

If pre-order date is between May 26th - June 1st:

Activation by July 23rd 2020

If pre-order date is June 1st or later:

Activations starting July 2020

Target by next Monday’s update:
Latest activation has April 30th pre-order date
 

NEW YORK:

If pre-order date is before May 26th:
Activation by end of June

If pre-order date is between May 26th - June 1st:

Activation by July 23rd 2020

If pre-order date is June 1st or later:

Activations starting July 2020

Target by next Monday’s update:
Latest activation has May 5th pre-order date

 

CALIFORNIA:

If pre-order date is between May 26th - June 1st:

Activation by June 25th 2020

If pre-order date is June 1st - June 9th:

Activations starting June 2020

If pre-order date is June 10th or later:

Activations starting July 2020

Target by next Monday’s update:
Latest activation has June 8th pre-order date


PARIS:

Pre-orders are on track to be delivered late summer

Hello would it still be possible if my shadow could be activated for new york if i ordered may 6th?

Hi. I just tried logging into my account online to see if anything changed but came up with “An error occurred during the update, try entering your payment details under billing.” And when I try clicking on either subscription or my orders it turns into a blank page and I have to refresh. Anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance.

So the target by monday’s update is to have the may 1st preorder date (Chicago) but last week the target was april 29th... if i ordered may 16th should I even expect to get activated by end of june? Is it probably not going to be until july that I get activated?

@RyanFromShadow  I personally appreciate your team’s steps towards transparency. Additionally, I share some concerns with this poster.

  • Why is the target for this week’s progress two days’ worth of pre-orders (20200429 - 20200501) as opposed to a closer-to-proportional amount of the backlog given the broader target?
  • Is “by June 30th” still a good estimate of when a May 25th Chicago pre-order will be activated?
  • If the progress through activation is “lumpy” i.e. not typically at a smooth per-week rate, then I think it would be helpful for there to be a disclaimer around this, and some additional information
    • I think intuitively your customers following this thread are discounting their remaining wait time as an approximately linear function. 
    • e.g. Is there is a plan in place to provision a large chunk of CH1 specifically in the last week of June? This info would help early- or mid- May pre-orderers understand that the intuitive linear model is underestimating their likely wait time.

You get the smartest person in town award for this :)
Our current activation Pace on Chicago DC is based on past data on users behavior. This is not an exact science and we can only forecast based on the past weeks + some buffer.
Turns out users behavior changed these past few weeks which may indeed have an impact on our users who preordered between the 20th & the 25th of May (since the activation date in the shop changed to july 2020 on the 26th of May)

I will be reassessing this next monday based on this week’s performance and we will then judge if we are on track.
And there is a plan to provision a large chunk of capacity in Chicago pretty soon indeed.

So my DC would be New York and I ordered on May 24th. Would that mean I will get activated in July? Right now I’m just confused and I haven’t slept in 2 days since I’ve been busy with work and fire department.

So, just to make sure I’m understanding this right, (because I wasn’t last time,) I ordered my Shadow on May 1st, and I’m with the Chicago data center. You plan to get my Shadow activated by next Monday? If my understanding is correct, I can’t wait!

Hello. I pre-ordered on May 25th for California and I don’t see anything regarding the dates before May 26. Does this mean activations until May 25th are done or do we still have to wait? If anyone has an answer, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I reached out to customer support but they said they’ll forward it to activation teams.
Does that mean that I should rather prepare for August/September?

Activations are going smoothly in the Paris data center (with some up and down here and there). As for the Amsterdam data center, everyone who ordered a Shadow boost before April 30th (outside of the very specific cases) should be activated by next Monday (June 8th).

i think the servers are in Paris and we just screen shear from there but i might be wrong. ive been waiting for mine for a while now

As summer officially started today (the 20th of June) when can we excpect infinite  to be activated? (New York servers).

Am in sauga using the new York server and it's working like a charm with a very good ping rate but obviously would love a local server

Hi, I ordered my shadow on May 15th. Support told me 1-4 weeks, and all I’ve been told that it’ll be by the end of this month. Did anyone order around that time and get theirs already?

They planned to get yours and people who ordered on the 8th activated before the next activation status post on Monday.

I am a pre-ordered 5/20th New York "Boost" and I noticed the goal of "Update next Monday:

@Xykez I ordered on May 3rd on Chicago data center and haven’t been activated either. How are all these pre-orders suppose to make the June 26th target date. Hard to believe when people who ordered 3 weeks before that date are still waiting.
