Chapter 1 - looking back on the first week

Chapter 1 - looking back on the first week

What a week it was, let me tell you.

Last week featured a lot of “firsts”: first company meeting, first (virtual) handshakes and fist bumps, first time sitting together to map out the future of Shadow...you get the picture.

But among these exhilarating firsts, was also the first execution of two tough decisions.

In constructing its takeover plan, Jezby Ventures spent previous months carefully analyzing Shadow’s situation to understand what it needed to do to build a healthy and sustainable business for years to come. The result? Addressing two topics in the first week, which would not only ensure the survival of Shadow, but pave the way for long term success.

So, without further ado, here’s a rundown of the notable topics in our first week out of the gates.

New leadership team has entered the arena

We kicked things off bright and early Monday morning by welcoming our new President, Octave Klaba, and CEO, Eric Sele, to the party.

And by “ party” I mean an all-hands meeting on Zoom to first say “hello, nice to meet you”, but also to break down how the next few weeks and months would look as we kicked off this new chapter.

They also promptly joined us on Slack to kick off open discussions to share initial thoughts that will shape the future of Shadow.

Thinking of Shadow’s long term success

We all have one mission: allow Shadow to grow, flourish and prosper for years centuries to come.

That’s why in this very first week, we’re already tackling tough decisions that were meticulously studied months prior by Jezby Ventures teams. Decisions that will have direct impacts today, but will create the foundation for a smooth runway for Shadow to reach its full potential in the future.

Two very important decisions were taken.

Trial with LG in South Korea
At the end of 2020, we launched a trial alongside LG in South Korea with a limited number of users. The initial testing period allowed us to assess the South Korean market from a service and business standpoint. While the feedback on the experience was overwhelmingly positive, we unfortunately were unable to maintain and scale in South Korea with our current financial and industrial business model. So in order to focus on establishing a sustainable business first, we must end the trial in South Korea by the end of May.

When will we be back? This we cannot say as of now.

Do we want to come back? You can bet your lucky penny on that!

Shadow Ultra & Shadow Infinite in the U.S.
Our vision remains unshaken: make high-end computing accessible to all. And this is exactly what we set out to do with the launch of these next-gen offers last year. However, in order to establish and build a sustainable future for Shadow, we’ve decided to not continue our lease for RTX 5k/6k graphic cards with 2CRSI.

We knew this would result in temporary hardship for our U.S. Shadow Ultra & Shadow Infinite users. But we also hope you understand we’ve meticulously reviewed the situation over the past months and believe this is the best path to ensure Shadow’s long term success and health and with it, a better and future-oriented service for you.

Of course, Shadow will continue and grow in the U.S., but we have to reboot parts of it, on new, sustainable grounds. If you have any ideas and comments on what we should offer, what features you’d not want to miss, what price you’d be okay to pay etc., please let us know!

💡Shadow Ultra & Shadow Infinite in Europe will not be impacted, as they are running on OVH hardware - a sister company of HubiC (which Shadow is now a part of).

Questions, Questions, Questions

We know you have (a lot of) questions - and we love you for that.

And rest assured, you are not alone, so do we.

With this new chapter just getting started, the dust is still settling and we’re just now getting to know each other's names - “Hey you’re Octave, right?”. So, as we come together to investigate the questions about life and Shadow’s future, your questions may not be answered right this second.

Our community managers - including me (hi!) - are gathering all the questions in order to make sure your voices are heard and you get an answer.

And when we do have the answer to your questions, you can be sure as heck we’ll be back with flashing lights and a fireworks show to share the information with you.

Until then, happy gaming!

Any news on us unquestionably neglected EU customers, waits of up to a year are insane, does your leadership have a plan to move installs forward?

as a loyal, US member of shadow that uses his shadow 90 percent of his time. For the love of sake, please don’t just dump us down to the boost after we’ve been fluidly experience finally stable and flourishing graphics and fps unlimited on ultra+, to something that has to play games on medium-high with hopes of 60fps. at least give us sometime of upgrade to the boost graphics, or put some of us thats been with you a year on a european server. idgaf about ping time lol. but serious, we deserve more than just boost, especially if we finally, the ones of us that upgraded, made the cut or has waited our term.

“If you have any ideas and comments on what we should offer, what features you’d not want to miss, what price you’d be okay to pay etc., please let us know!”

For me personally, I think something around 15euro per month would be a fairly reasonably price for a machine with below specifications:

  • i7 9th Gen
  • 16GB RAM
  • Nvidia GTX1660 - 6GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD

And this VDI would serve a lot of users for a long time.

I did some checks on local seller pages and you can get a desktop with those specs for around 1200 euro, where I live.
Now, I would count at around 15 euro per month, for 12 months and using it 5 years = 900 euro.
So yes, it's still cheaper than buying the device yourself and hopefully having the advantage of newer technology faster at the same price. As tech companies, especially using big server farms need to take End of Life into account.

Just my thoughts...

This! 100% this!

Seriously Europe is a much bigger market and we constantly get overlooked what the hell is going on?

UK customer here, paid 12/February Activation scheduled…. Nov 29th..

If I don’t have no further information regarding the shortening of this or even confirmation of its current date by the end of the month I am cancelling my sub and getting a refund.

I strongly advise anyone else in the European market to do this we are constantly overlooked dont stand for it!

If I don’t have no further information regarding the shortening

So proud of you. :flag_gb:

I would definetly see Shadow in Poland! Some of my friends are following Shadow but they can’t preorder because Shadow is not available yet there.

To be honest, it’s all too early for me to get excited. I still fully expect a significant price raise in the near future once they have meticulously studied the current revenue model for a few months and decided a 200 - 300% price raise is needed to ensure Shadow’s long-term health. I honestly never understood how they made money and they went bankrupt, so I guess I have my answers.

I’m not quitting them now, I want to support them, but I will be watching the news very closely the coming months.

If the Shadow Infinite and Ultra were dropped in the United States, you might as well remove them from your site because that is portraying misleading information on your U.S. Shadow users. All of you should also talk about the Shadow Upgrade storage in one of your meetings. Investigate your prices because how is it that I chose the $11.99 yearly subscription, but all of you keep taking $11.99 every month on the 7th. Explain how that works.

You do not pay $11.99 once and get a year of shadow. It is $11.99 per month. All plans are billed monthly.

The yearly subscription means that you are in a contract to pay $11.99 per month for a year. Thats why its cheaper. Cause its a contract to pay monthly for 12 months. Which you cannot cancel.

The $14.99 plan is billed monthly. And there is no contract to pay. So you can cancel anytime.

I am a long time subscriber and have used both  plans. I hope this helps you understand.

Easterbunnie, has no idea what a subscription is and is complaining about it LOL!

Meanwhile in reality, I am cancelling my preorder from this failed foreign company. I purchased Boost months and months ago and the “My Orders” tab in my account still says “Activation by April 29th 2021.”

ITS MAY 15TH!!!

I have not received any email in regards to any delay. The ONLY reason I even ordered Boost was to be able to upgrade since the Boost hardware is basically an outdated trash PC. Now that they are killing the higher tier upgrades in the USA there is no reason to look forward to, nor spend my money on this company at all. They literally just shot themselves in the foot in the US market where GPUs are more rare than Bigfoot.

NVIDIA’s GeForce Now just got a new customer.

Userlevel 2

I would love some extra RAM on my shadow boost, specifically to play Star Citizen. That would be much more important than extra storage. I preordered ultra, but as I remember that configuration will also only have 16GB.

Good luck going forward!!

What parts/centers specifically will require a reboot?

I am guessing this is also a reason for the need pause activations at this time. I am eagerly waiting to hear when activations will resume! I was so close :joy:  May 31st.

I have never had any experience with RTX graphics cards. All I know is that I have heard it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find the RTX gpu’s. So...this definitely makes sense. Plans to go to AMD Radeon series then?

If not using the 2CRSI networking, will you be switching to same OVH systems that are running in Europe or going with a different server solution?

I am looking forward to the release of more information. Can’t wait to not have to count on Loudplay for my gaming time!

Yeah, I’m not happy. I started Shadow Boost with the expectation that I would have Shadow Infinite this year. Of the reasons why, the main reason is that with modern games, I really needed that 1 TiB primary drive. 256 GiB is just not enough when a single game is 50 GB.

Simple question - is the plan to re-introduce higher tiers in the US in the future?  I’ve been on whatever the highest tier is, and it did what I wanted. I’m happy to maintain my downgraded boost account and wait - but not if boost is going to remain our only option.

I have (had) both an Ultra and an Infinite account for multiple members of my household, but now that we’re getting bumped down to boost i’ll likely be cancelling both of my subscriptions. What is offered in the boost plan simply isn’t good enough. I hate to do it because I really love what Shadow is doing, but i’m certainly not going to continue paying for accounts that don’t fulfill my needs in the hopes that eventually a better plan will be offered. I do wish Shadow the best of luck, though!

In the same boat as you BLite. If it’s not going to be an option, I will need to look elsewhere.

As a US Infinite customer, I am saddened by this.
What’s worse is that I use Shadow for WORK.  Yes, I have some games on there, but it’s my high-powered workhorse.

I am losing work now because of this.  I have to go and finance a new PC now with similar power to Infinite.  Boost is great as-is, but it’s too weak for my work.
More of a warning would have been nice.  It’ll be around a month before I can get a PC, and I’ll have to finance it with payments likely much higher than the monthly price I paid for Infinite.
Oh well.
You did advertise it as NOT just a gaming system but as a work system also… Did it not occur to you that some people would actually use it for work?  To raise a family?
Sad….

I might have to cancel to. Shadow Boost is just not good enough. FYI - don't care about ping either. I have been playing on my California Data center Shadow while being on business travel in Eastern Europe. No problems

Even though I’m still far from being convinced this entire reorganisation thing is going to end well, I do appreciate your effort of offering transparent information here. And regularly so from now on, I hope.

But reading through the comments here, I’m sad to see, however, that communication with waiting clients obviously hasn’t improved since the time I was one of them...

Upto a year? Try waiting since October 2019 ._.

But honestly, I can’t give Shadow too much shit. If they could get it out  faster, they would

Shadow, you need to stop trying to make things sound rosy and wonderful just because you have new owners. Considering your existing members and the expectations they have being users of the product you supply is crucial to a long-lasting business model. Shadow is a great idea but has clearly been poorly managed from a business point of view, hence new owners!

I am in the UK and have been loyal subscriber for years but been waiting for the hardware upgrade forever with poor updates as to when it will happen, it doesn't look like it will anytime soon at this rate and still no real indication at all of when.

There are many people who cant be bothered to comment and will just bear it, but for someone that normally falls into that category you can imagine how disappointed I feel as I am using valuable time to say something.

So Shadow please think about your users and remember that without us there is no Shadow
