Shadow removed from Apple App Store: What you should know

Dear #TeamShadow,

during the review of our most recent app update, Apple’s team rejected and removed the Shadow iOS, iPadOS & tvOS apps from the App Store. As it stands, the apps are no longer available for download.

We are currently in discussion with Apple's team to understand more and get the apps reinstated on the App Store as soon as possible.

Members who have already downloaded the app to their device(s) will still have full functionality and access to the app(s). Unfortunately, we won't be able to update them for the time being, so the experience may become degraded over time.

FAQ

Why did Apple remove the Shadow apps from the App Store?

We are currently discussing with the Apple team to understand what happened and get the apps reinstated on the App Store as soon as possible.

When will the app be back?

We are unable to provide this information. We are investigating the matter further for now to understand why the app was removed and will move forward from there.

Is the macOS app impacted by this?

The macOS app is not impacted and continues to work as normal.

Again! Ugh, Apple always has a problem with something.

I hope the Shadow team can find a permanent solution to remain on the App Store.

Is the Test Flight beta app affected by this?

Is the Test Flight beta app affected by this?

Unfortunately, yeah. I signed up for the beta a few weeks back, but never installed it.

I tried to install it just now, it said the app doesn’t exist. :disappointed_relieved:

It could have to do with the fact that Shadow is a subscription based service. According to Apples rules for apps on the App Store, if a monthly fee is charged for the service the developer must offer a way through the app, using Apples payment system, to subscribe to the service. Meaning Apple would get their cut of 30% for all those that sign up through the app. Shadow can still offer subscribing outside of the app but they must offer it in the app as well.

I thought it would be because Shadow would let you play games that haven’t been approved by Apple.

Spotify only lets you subscribe online, not in the app.

Was that just added? I never knew that.

Looks like I am wrong on the Spotify statement I was going on the info in the App Store , which clearly indicates on the Apps store page that the app offer in App purchases. But then on download if you go into there premium section it looks like you should be able to pick a plan but can’t. Looks like there may be some foolery going on in order to skate apples rules.

I’m surprised Spotify has not been taken off of the Apple store. Shadow should do the same that they are doing if that is the reason why it is being blocked from the App Store.

Agreed, but hopefully it isn’t that and it is just some miss use of an api or something like that. I can’t see Shadow agreeing to give Apple a 30% cut of subscription profits. I believe after the first year that someone is subscribed in app the % apple takes drops to like 15 or 10%. But there are not many apps that people subscribe to for more than a year usually, apple knows that and uses that drop to say that they are fair…...

Should give an option for those on the annual contract to cancel Shadow for the next 30 days since some of us just use Shadow on the iOS devices.

I sincerely hope that the app can be returned to the AppStore and TestFlight as soon as possible. Could the reason for removal be the usage of the metal API? How long does Apple usually need to respond?

If the worst happens and the app is never allowed back in, would it be technically feasible to allow the app via third party mechanisms like AltStore?

Also, what happens, when the counter on TestFlight hits 0? Will the app stop working by then?

Wow, my IPad Pro 12.9 i just ordernd mainly for Shadow came today and now im Not even able to Download the App…

what do you think how Long will it take till the App is back online?

should i return the iPad and get an Android Tablet or will it only take a few days ?

then the answer is simple: make a more expensive subscription through Apple and still let people order at the same price through the internet.

I am so glad I have a Samsung phone. 30% fee for what ? For just being on the great apple store ?  They have so much money, they don’t even care about the little guy, so what if they lose a few customers, there are always a few around the corner ready to buy an overpriced phone just because it is apple.

P.S the only way to beat them is to make a html version of the shadow app to access the pc from a browser like gfn did.

Or perhaps to remove the game list from the apple app and leave only the button for the shadow pc desktop this way they have no more excuses to be money hungry.

Well Apple hates when they cannot monitor every online move you make and make a buck out of your data. Remember the days when Apple was still a creative tool? Than again do we really need Iphone and Apple OS support?

Don’t even bother with these losers. Make a web app. They are just removing the app because they feel like it. Either that or you should sue them. I can’t stand Apple! They can just remove your app for any reason they make up. They’ll probably tell you they removed your app because you farted yesterday!

They already removed the gamelist the last time Apple removed their app. They’re just messing people like high school bullies.

The Google Play Store also charges 30% it’s common practice across all digital storefronts. If you wanna blame anyone, blame Valve. Steam was the proof that they could get away with it before the Apple App Store or iPhone existed.

It is BS that they removed it from the App Store though. I play exclusively on iPhone and Apple TV, if the app becomes less usable and there’s no update I will be canceling my subscription. It’s unfortunate, because my experience with Shadow so far has been mostly positive.

True, but the Shadow app is not kicked from google play. I am curious to hear their reason of why it was removed from the apple store. Even so, when you buy a phone, the phone is supposed to be yours and apple has this idea that the phone is still theirs after you bought it. You can not repair it somewhere else because they are fighting other shops hard, You can not install an app outside of their store and that is BS. I bought the phone, I install from anywhere I want. On android, you can install an apk from outside with no trouble at all.

Well, I’ve always gotten on my son’s case for Jailbreaking his iPhone. I’ve just not seen the point. But, this could be reason enough to Jailbreak and install Shadow.app from Cydia?

I hope Shadow and Apple get this dispute worked out. I just paid for a year subscription for Shadow on the premise that it worked on my iPhone/iPad. Luckily I downloaded the Shadow app JUST BEFORE it was removed. Good thing I didn’t wait until my Shadow was provisioned, or else I wouldn’t have been able to get the app!

BTW: Shadow Good job on beating the time estimate on the delivery of my provisioning by a week! I rewarded you already by upgrading from Boost to Ultra!

It’s been 4 days, is there at least an update on why it was removed and maybe a timeline to address those issues?

Thanks!
