I tried most game streaming services so you don't have to

Hey all,

I tried the following services

* Stadia pro (I pre-ordered my exclusive controller)

* GeForce Now founders edition

* Shadow (going for infinite once beta strats soon 🥳)

I am what the industry calls Early adopter, an important note is that I live in Toronto, Canada and my internet is gigabyte Fibre to home so experiences may vary tested all services on PC, Oled 4k TV and Android smart phones oneplus 7 and 8 pro

Didn't mention Xbox and Playstation due to the exclusivity and non so much competitive nature with the three mentioned

So here are the pros and cons of all services.

Stadia

Pros:

* no need for an android box. Chrome cast and their controller would do the trick, chrome browser extension and direct phone with controller on modern phones also work.

* Their controller is actually pretty comfortable to use

* Despite other beliefs the games ran very smoothly with no stuttering, lag, pixilation/smudging or problems.

* ease of play as promised, open the app press the start game and within a minute everything loaded.

Cons

* game library is a hard reset for all platforms so you'll have to rebuy any existing and new games you'd like to experience (and yes I've done that for multiple games for the science of testing among platforms)

* graphics are set on the medium setting and can't customize them (very consoles like) and upscalled to 4k from 1080p so there is even a further drop in quality

* took them a while but prices of their games (weather new or old) were sometimes more expensive than other platforms including Sony and Microsoft. $$$

GeForce now

Pros

* some of your PC gaming library can be used and no need for repurchase (for a list of titles approved by the publishers)

* low competitive subscription cost especially for Stadia first and Shadow second, for gaming that is

* games running smoothly with high FPS and customized graphical settings %%

Cons

* %% a lot of codec problems and choppiness in quality of decoding the video stream causing the games to look blurry and squary/smudgy/pixilated

* 1080p resolution :(

* limited game time 1 hour for non paying customers and 6 for founders.

* every time you'd want to login into a game you'll have to login through launchers (steam, ubisoft, origin) and Evey time the application require authentication since it doesn't save old logins.

with Evey launch the game settings reset and some games require a hard reset to adjust settings causing you more delays to play the game.

Shadow

Pros

* all of your cloud gaming platforms carries over and can be played (steam, origin, ubisoft...)

* true native 4k quality with support for high refresh rate up to 120 IF your hardware supports it (Oneplus 8 pro phones).

* no choppiness or smudging with the codec being used to stream the video to my platforms (main reason for me switching from GeForce Now)

* it's a PC 🤷‍♂️ so not only for gaming I actually use it for daily tasks and with infinite you can actually do heavy tasks on it

Cons

* most expensive of the bunch and no free trails/free tiers.

* to get the most out of the service you need a good android box (shadow ghost or nvedia shield pro)

* slow on the activations (to ensure service is on par and avoid problems currently being faced with nvedia GeForce now) but still..... Slow activations for new customers.

* for the current boost entry tier, games run on low FPS on higher settings as hardware is limited by slow CPUs bottlenecking the GPU.

All in all I loved the iniatives of all the companies and was a strong supporter of Stadia when it was announced. I don't want any of the services to fail as I truly believe that streaming services are the future and we can achieve great results with all the power of these workstations combined.

Hope this was helpful and do let me know what are your opinions and if I was unfair to any.

Thanks 😊

Informative.  I have also personally tried them all and Shadow is the best alrounder.  The negatives I've found are the CPU and the storage space.   Also latency from the UK to the server in France.  It's early days for cloud streaming so I accept these negatives but I wouldn't give up my gaming PC for it and until that happens cloud streaming won't hit the big time.

I'm hoping in future I can give up my gaming PC and use Shadow but that will mean a better CPU, a server in the UK, more storage space and the cost staying around the same, which I don't think will be anytime soon.  I'll be keeping my subscription regardless and I hope many others do the same as in supporting it, in the beginning, the profits may go towards these improvements.

Thank you for your reviews, @Raladin3d . Very informative indeed.

I have Stadia basic and Shadow boost myself and can confirm what you wrote. I agree that Shadow is the best allrounder and is my cloud gaming platform of choice at this time.

I do have to note that my first two weeks with Shadow were absolutely FILLED with troubleshooting to get it to work properly. So in my opinion it's not exactly “ready for the masses” so to speak. Not everyone will want - or is able - to do the work that might be required for Shadow to work. In that respect Stadia works much more “out of the box” and is more consumer friendly.

Also @tommy6000009 makes a really good point about storage space, the CPU and the location of the Data Centers. Personally I’d love to see Boost get a better CPU too 🙂 Eventhough at the moment I only play an older game so don’t experience any bottleneck but this will change at some point in the future when I go play a more modern day game.

And as I happen to live in Amsterdam, The Netherland (where my boost DC is) I have a really good connection. But if I would to upgrade to Ultra/Infinite at some point this could very well change as the DC's are further away.

All in all I'm happy with Shadow and will likely keep my sub even if I would take a break from gaming. Just to support this wonderful new form of gaming.

I agree with the posters above. Shadows only weakness at the moment is the lack of more data centers.

Stadia and geforce now gives me around 5 ms from Sweden, shadow is around 50ms (Mon supported country of course, but I'm really hoping for a Nordic datacenter <3)

“to get the most out of the service you need a good android box (shadow ghost or nvedia shield pro)”

That is so wrong.

Thanks for the post.

I was aiming to get a high end gaming laptop this year, but in my opinion Intel bricked all Ryzen 4000 laptops on the market, and OEMs play balls with Intel, so I jumped on cloud gaming insteada.

When I get activated, (prob (end of) Aug according to my sub message) if shadow brings the quality, I would be considering getting a dock and a portable monitor for my OnePlus 8 pro, and turn this into a less heat, less noise, cheap portable high end  gaming station through cloud gaming.

If you want to play shooters, I would consider something with an ethernet connection.

I am considering an ATEN UH3236… will see if i find a better option. Has anyone tested this with Shadow before?

I guess I should've clarified it better. To get the most... IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ON THE TV 4K Native.

Obviously mini PC builds, laptops basically most OS systems where u can have access to the shadow app would allow u to play.

Is that what u meant?

Great Post, I’ve used all the above with exception of Shadow ( activation in June for me -UK)

Geforce Now is my current platform, the security you get is just unacceptable , Rockstar , Bethesda, Activision - all removed their games from the platform, despite the fact it’s a Steam purchase. Something to do with wanting money for their popular titles to be enabled , as it’s a developers responsibility and choice. There’s also minor tweaks involved in order to make it run via Geforce Now - So they want the coin.

There’s a lot of politics involved which is where a virtual PC is the better solution, you jump that hurdle. You also get the added bonus of using mods for all your favourite games. I honestly cannot wait to test it, and I’m sure in the future the tech will improve to incorporate VR!

Just a question: how  4 cores/8 threads 3.4ghz for boost shadow service is “bottlenecking” the GPU?
It’s one of the best processors out there….

Thats a great amount of information you provided there. Interesting about Stadia considering Google is now moving away from it. I currently have a sub with Geforce Now but have signed up to a Shadow pre-order because I found Geforce Now lacking, in particular with the limited amound of games I have in my steam library it will play. Somebody in their forum suggested Shadow so I thought I would give it a go even though i’m going to have to wait a while before my sub is ready.

Make some CPU benchmarks and compare results online. Afterward, you might wanna change what you said. Your welcome.
