Question

Red Box upper left on Shield TV, terrible visuals.

Badge

For about the last month the app on shield TV. I have tried everything tech support has suggested including a total reformat, but on the shield TV everything looks horrible. The image gets pixelated and takes a few seconds to catch up.

This is only seems to be happening on the shield TV for the most part, but it happens on any shield TV since I have two.

Any ideas how to fix the issue?

Honestly, I am about to give up on the whole thing due to lack of customer support.

Hey @texasdan17
You can try these steps: https://help.shadow.tech/hc/en-gb/articles/360010559860-S-101-An-Issue-Happened-with-the-Streaming-Services

If that doesn’t work you can try DISABLING the “Keep my drivers updated” function in your settings and download geforce experience which will automatically search for new drivers which you can try installing. If all this does not help you will have to contact support about the issue and eventually attach screenshots and a detailed description.

I have already done all that from shadow, still no dice.

I have talked to “support” for over a month, about 40 emails, they basically said tough noogies.

Sorry to hear that, but sadly, I believe, there is nothing more this community could do for you. You are able to hand in a bug report which might help: https://forum.shadow.tech/bug-reporting-56

@texasdan17a few questions:

  1. Which version of the Shadow Android app are you running on the Shield?
  2. Is the Shield TV connected via Ethernet?
  3. Do you have another device (PC or Mac) to test on the same network via Ethernet?

I use a Shield TV (connected via Ethernet) for Shadow, and my experience is equivalent to Shadow running from a Windows PC connected to the same gear. When there are Internet problems, the experience is poor on both. When the Internet is solid, the performance is solid on both.

Testing with another device (PC or Mac) via Ethernet is helpful, because you can see the full details in the Quick Menu overlay...we don’t get that on Android.

I have tried all that as well, it was running just fine until this point. It is using a wired connection in both locations. I have tried laptop at both location and they run fine, but the shield always have the red square and problems.

I uninstalled and reinstalled shadow app at both locations, so it should be running the current version. I can look later if you need the specific number.

@texasdan17 thanks for that - what do you mean by “red square” - do you have a screenshot?

Badge

There ya go. This was directly after a reinstall.

Some where I read that is graphics card failed, but it only does it on Shield.

I should mention too that I have not seen something like this before anywhere. If the screen is still, meaning I am not using it, it looks fine. But when I move a mouse or something it gets all weird, and then it will settle back after a 10 secs or so.

Weird...I’ve never seen the red box myself.

Have you tried the Shadow beta clients? I use those exclusively.

@Jim29er That is an issue where shadow was unable to detect the GPU (correctly) and/or has detected missing drivers. (https://help.shadow.tech/hc/en-gb/articles/360010559860-S-101-An-Issue-Happened-with-the-Streaming-Services). Running different client versions will probably not help since it is not a streaming issue. There is always a chance that switching client version changes something, and it might be worth a try, but don’t hope too much.

How do you use the beta client on on shield tv?

I have tried that also, switching version. I can log onto windows version all is well. Switch to shield version and it is back to crap.

Also note, I only ever used the shield version before this happen. Only been testing on the widows version laterly.

How do you use the beta client on on shield tv?

You can opt-in to the beta at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.blade.shadowcloudgaming

...or install the apk manually, after download from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/blade-group/shadow/

@texasdan17 can you also confirm your settings?

Mine:

I have max bandwidth, and similar selections.

I do have it in 4k and 60 fps, connected to TV.

I signed up for beta, does that go to the shield tv version too?

The beta should go to the Shield TV yes, as it’s just a Play Store distribution for Android.

Boost is not designed for 4K, but if you’re insisting on using it, set “low bandwidth mode” to “On” so that the encoding is using x.265 (HEVC).

Setting max bandwidth is also not necessarily a good thing. I like using https://www.testufo.com/ (selecting the “Compare Frame Rates: Video Game Motion”) for assessing stream performance, as it’s a simple way to generate “activity” without launching a game. But, this must be done with PC or Mac to get the network stats from the Quick Menu overlay. We have a 1Gbps symmetrical Internet at a local shared office space, also with lower latency to the Shadow data center my VM is in. However, using a bitrate higher than ~ 35Mbps generates a pattern of severe video stutter...when I use the same laptop at my house, I can crank the bitrate all the way up with no issues. I believe there is a network device at the shared office space which is limiting UDP streams in some way.
