Severe Audio and Visual Freezes with Shadow

Background Info

For a long period of time, I was having next to no issues with Shadow and connection was smooth and any interference was rare. However, as of recently, my ISP has changed and I have switched routers. My download ( >50 MB/s) and upload speeds (>30 MB/s) are clearly better with the change. Nothing about my setup (standard old dell PC with a tower) has changed except for the router. I am connected via Ethernet and am extremely close to the router in case I have to use WiFi (it hasn’t come to that, however).

The Freezes Themselves
That background information is important to my problems because as soon as the router switch, Shadow has been giving me freezes at seemingly random intervals in terms of video and audio. The visual freezes generally last upwards of 10 seconds, and after the freeze has ended, the video I then recieve is blurry and pixelated and usually doesn’t fix itself until restart the stream with the keybind. On the other hand, the audio issues start when the video freezes, where the audio will take the sound that is being played and just continually run off with it usually repeating the last couple milliseconds of it. In some cases, the video will freeze and the audio will continue as normal. No matter the case however, whenever there is a visual/audio stutter or freeze, my keyboard and mouse inputs are accepted as normal, and when I am playing a game, everything I have inputted will be taken into account as if no freeze was happening at all.

Additional Connection Info
Looking at the shadow control panel when a freeze is happening, my latency will shoot up to extremely high values for a moment, with a low end of 1,000 ms to upwards of ~15,000 ms. Normally, my latency is ~30 ms. And, on a side note, I never have had any packet loss, that value is always reported to be at 0%.

I speed tested my connection to my respective data center (CA), and my latency is always at its normal value (~30 ms) and neglible jitter. However, I have noticed that my upload speed graph has several discontinuities, but is having no perceivable drops in where it is continuous. However, my download speed graph has been rreported several times as being literally a graph of points; there is no continuous lines anywhere, and the download speed wildly fluctuates up and down.

Finally, the last thing that I have been noticing is that my Bandwidth graph in the shadow control panel has been reporting at scarily low values. I’ve been seeing values as low as 0.1 mb/s, but with everything running fine and no problems (except for the visual and audio issues, of course). Furthermore, when my Bandwidth is being reported the low values of <1 mb/s, my FPS is also reported to be comically low, at values around 5 FPS, when it is clear in the client that I am actually getting a smooth 60 FPS when not having the freezes. Interestingly, when setting my Bandwidth usage setting to automatic, Shadow always sets it to 50 mb/s, no matter what. Setting the allocated Bandwidth value to a lower value such as 30 or 25 mb/s does nothing to solve the issue, and it still reports at extremely low values occasionally. When it is not reporting low values, the Bandwidth graph is finds itself about 5 mb/s below whatever I have allocated for shadow (which as of recently I have been allocating about 25 mb/s).

So all this to say, it has been very difficult to play games or even simply watch youtube or listen to music in the background, with some of the freezes requiring me to close the terminal and relaunch the client entirely. It’s very tedious to deal with and has made it hard for me to want to use shadow at all.

If anyone has any answers, that’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who is your ISP, what is your router and does it have the puma chipset?

ISP is Spectrum, router is a RAC2V1K Askey, and as far as I know it does not have the puma chipset with the information I have on it.

Have you run a speed test (speedtest.net) when you feel your mbps are dropping?

Using speedtest.net shows no changes in download or upload speeds during a freeze. However, one thing I didn’t check was my connection to shadow center during a freeze, so I used shadow’s speed test and here were the results:

Speed test normally (No freeze):

Speed test during a Freeze:

Im having very similar issues with my unit as well. Running on :

Today has been especially bad, I’m getting this effect about every hour or so:

I cut the resolution of my game extensively hoping that might help, but no such luck.

I’ve got this as a connection to Chicago Comcast as well:

Yeah, it’s a really weird situation and it’s making it extremely difficult to use the service :-(

@Denimbeard Please try prefer speed and prefer reliability in the launcher.

@GreenerOnThisSide Did you try Shadow on any other device on the same network? What is the CPU and Video card of the computer running Shadow? Did you try doing a tracert from your local to your Shadow?

Doing some investigating with the router and other devices on the network, it appears to be on the router side of things. The router appears to be periodically losing connection to the modem which is causing the freezes. So it has been figured out and I will have ton find a new router to use. Thanks for the help, though. Problem is going to be solved when i get a new router, but if the problem persists, I will return to this thread, because it may actually be a mix of my internet connection and shadow.

@GreenerOnThisSide No problem! I hope that fixes it)

I’m having the same issue here on an older laptop, with Spectrum 300/30 even though connected through Ethernet. I thinking of changing the D.N.S ports on the router. Hope to hear from all soon.

Can you please try the beta app?

You can download it at https://sso.shadow.tech/

Can you tell the CPU and Video Card on the laptop that is running Shadow?
