Slow CPU cores and now Turbo

Hey Shadow,

today I recognized that my Shadow Instance’ CPU cores are not going any higher than 2.5 GHz. Even when I give them some work to do. Before that it was always 8x3.2 GHz.

So whats’s wrong here? Working on the Instance is lagging like hell and not really fun at the moment.

Bit of clarification would be nice.

Regards,

Chris

btw: the now in the topic title should of course means “no”...cannot edit the title.

Ok, after I rebooted the instance three times at least the lag is gone but there is still a noticeable degradation in performance when using my 3D appliance viewport which uses a fair amount of CPU power for certain functions.

So where is my missing core speed?

We’re quickly writing to let you know that last month, the combination of newly-designed hardware, enthusiastic members and intense usage (with new games and the holiday season) led the Shadow Ultra and Infinite servers to overheat. This explains why you might have had performance issues while using your Shadow around Christmas time, and we apologize for this inconvenience.

Thanks to some quick thinking by our tech team, we applied a temporary fix by disabling Turbo Boost on the processor. This interim solution stabilized the experience, and so far, feedback from the community has been positive.

Our team is still on the case and working on a long-term solution that will allow you to use Shadow to its full potential. We will let you know as soon as we have new updates.

This is what I was sent. I mean honestly if they are having to knowingly disable part of the service that is being paid for, is there going to be some sort of compensation for that?

I don’t even have an Ultra or Infinite Shadow. because, surprise, I’ve been waiting for my hardware for over a year now.

So tell me Shadow, why’s my Boost instance reduced? Are you even reading your own discussion board?

If this is also going to be a permanent “feature” of Shadow like the 30 minute auto shutdown then I’m going to cancel my subscription. For a young company Shadow is really quick when it comes to adapting the anti consumer behaviour of the big tech companys. Not communicating such a case is a  really bad move.

I mean I see the same stuff in the Shadow client every day since two years+, two guys telling me how Shadow is the best, the secrets of our data centers, how to install all my games in Shadow and some other blabla….why the hell not putting a note in the client that there might be a significant degradation in performance? Not everyone is a brainless smartphone guy that signed to Twitter, Facebook, and whatever else there might be.

I’ll ask again: when is this technical issue resolved and when do I get my missing clock speed back?

There is no performance degradation on Boost. CPU Turbo is enabled. I don’t know where you see that.. Also the auto shut down is there to kick off people who are AFK. When people are AFK they take up a seat in the datacenter which is not the point of it. You basically take people a seat away by being AFK.

No performance degradation? Yeah, right. Tell that Blender and the OpenImage viewport denoiser. Heavily depending on CPU power and after that you tell that tools like Handbrake or the export of a Natron project into an image sequence, just to name examples.

And since when is a missing core speed of 8x 700 MHz not a degradation in performance?

Look man, not everyone is a gaming person on Shadow who might not notice what it missing right now because games run fine. How do you think I noticed this in the first place? Because some of my tools did not behave like they used to before.

Don’t even know why I have to debate this. I pay for my instance as anyone else and therefore I just take the liberty to ask when this is resolved. Especially when there is no notice to be found from Shadow telling me that there is something wrong. I find it just a bad business practice not to notify customers about this.

@Butcho

As Phobos correctly stated: “ There is no performance degradation on Boost. CPU Turbo is enabled...” If you are still experiencing issues on your boost be sure to send logs to shadow via your shadow client so they can look into your issue when you open a ticket. -Gelgoog.

And you know exactly what’s wrong with my instance just by looking at my text here? :-)

Let me help you here: there is a degradation in performance on my instance, the Shadow support forwarded my ticket up the chain of command to look into the trouble I am having with it. My CPU Turbo is definitely not going higher than 2.7, sometimes with a little luck up to 2.8  GHz.

Interesting to see the “I don’t have a problem with the product than you cannot have any problem with the product.” mentality never dies in community driven discussion boards. Anyway, the support will take care of it now. Thanks for your time and help. ^^

@Butcho This statement was not intended to imply that your issues aren’t real, but rather that there isn’t a known problem with Boost. You’ve engaged Blade support on it, which is the proper path for investigation. Keep in mind that the reverse of your last statement is also prevalent - many people assume that because they are having problems, everyone else must be, too.

I’ve read through this thread, and am missing it - which data center is your Shadow in?

@Butcho What do you mean shadow doesn’t inform you? Everyone who is affected got a mail and the status page shows you the the services status. Do you expect a phone call or how would you like to be informed?
