I have had Shadow for a few days and I wanted to see if there is any advice I can get regarding issues that I am having with with streaming video within the application.

When either streaming video (YouTube, ESPN+) and gaming (Steam) I encounter significant amounts of stuttering with the video. I have tried a couple of things to resolve it (upping bandwidth usage and enabling “low bandwidth mode”) but neither improved the quality of the video.

I have the FPS counter running in Steam while playing a game and it shows a fairly steady 60FPS. Latency in the Shadow usage states is >30 and packet loss is 0.

My laptop is connected wirelessly via WiFi on what should be a 5ghz band (I feel like I saw 2.4 when setting up for some reason but that shouldn’t be right) and both video streaming and gaming are pretty much unusable. TV is connected is directly connected to a mesh WiFi satellite which improves the stuttering but the image quality is still rough. The TV is running the app through a Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I have been running GeForce Now through it for a few months now with little to no issues.

My internet connected is 100/10 and any tests I show full speed both ways with single digit latency.

I am going to test a direct connection to the modem at some point to see if that improves anything, but it would still be important for me to be able to use the service via a wireless connection.

I know that the service works and works well, I am just trying to figure out how to make it work well for me. I have also used it for non-gaming and non-video tasks and it works wonderfully. I just need to get the video issues sorted out.

Thank you for any feedback you can provide. Let me know if you need any additional detail.

So, while doing some troubleshooting of what I believed to be a connection issue, something weird happened and I am not sure what it means or what the resolution is. "Resolution" may be the important word.

I had disconnected my laptop from an external monitor to test a direct connection to the modem and see if that would solve my problems. I didn't test it on the laptop as the laptop doesn't have ethernet built in and I let my kid play with the external adapter and haven't seen it since. I tested it with the Nvidia Shield Pro. I plugged it into the PC monitor and directly to the modem. It kind of helped, but still far from playable. So I gave up for the day and started putting everything back.

I put the USB adapter for my wireless mouse back in the laptop and moved the mouse a bit to make sure it was working. I hadn't connected the laptop back to the external monitor yet. I noticed the pointer movement felt smoother as there was a small amount of latency in the movement before. So I thought to myself "what the heck, let's give this one more try" and fired the game back up. Smooth 60fps on WiFi only. So it looks like my issue isn't connectivity, it is video output to a TV or monitor. I do not have these issues using just "local" hardware.

Is there a workaround for this?

Sorry for the length of this post, but I am really excited about this service and I wanted to make sure I got as much detail out there as I can to hopefully get suggestions on a fix.

I’ve seen other posts like this, with people having issues with external monitors. It seems like it comes down to a “sync” issue, like in this one:

Reading through that, it doesn’t sound exactly like the problem you’re describing, but something to look at...

I also use an external monitor, had this issue, what I do is simply use the alpha, for some reason that seems to solve the issue.

So I think I found a fix for the laptop-to-external monitor issue that I was having.

In the laptop Windows 10 session I used the WIN + P combination to bring up the “Project” options and switched it over to “second screen only”. I tested both video through YouTube and gaming through Steam and the latency that I was seeing on the external monitor was no longer present.

Just don’t do what I did for 10 minutes and try to do this through the Shadow session before remembering that Shadow wasn’t projecting the video, my laptop was.

I haven’t tested this on the Shield PRO, but this seems to have fixed the issue with connecting a monitor to the laptop and I wanted to leave this here in case someone else had the same issue.

If that solved your issue do mark the question as solved)
